Property description & features

  • Tenure: Freehold
  • Large well-mixed woodland in the High Weald AONB
  • Stream, natural spring and a lovely pond
  • Useful storage and shelter in place
  • This woodland is not suitable for residential use

Pennywort Wood offers a rare opportunity to own a large well-mixed woodland in the High Weald AONB.

The woodland boasts fantastic features including a stream fed by a natural spring and a picturesque pond. Over the years, the site has been thoughtfully utilized, boasting pre-existing shelter, storage facilities and a charcoal kiln.

Tranquil pathways wind through the woodland, guiding visitors from the site base camp nestled along the stream's edge to elevated points in the valley. Here, expansive camp areas await, offering ideal spaces for group activities and woodland adventures. Throughout the higher reaches, expansive clearings provide ample room for camping, with a sizable roundhouse crafted specifically for summer stays. Additionally, a well-appointed compost toilet ensures comfort and convenience.

The diversity of woodland stock adds to the allure of Pennywort Wood. South of the stream, a rich assortment of oak, birch, chestnut, ash, sycamore, cherry, hazel and interesting ground fauna can also be found, including a wash of bluebells in season. Further north, the site features a blend of larch, towering Scots pine, Douglas fir, oak of various ages and an area of chestnut coppice in the northern corner.

Pennywort Wood is secluded and private, ideal for those looking for escape and woodland adventures amongst the varied wildlife that lives in the woods. Roe deer and badgers are clearly in residence.

The woodland is currently used as a Forest School for one day a week by a local not-for-profit organisation Project Rewild, which allows children to reconnect with nature and each other. Ideally, we hope that the new owner would be keen to let important work continue at Pennywort.

Locally the picturesque village of Robertsbridge, with shops, restaurants and a good pub and train station is just a few minutes away by car. Staplecross is within walking distance offering basic amenities and also a good pub. Bodium Castle with a cafe and restaurant can be reached on foot along lovely footpaths. Further afield the coast is just a short 20-minute journey from this idyllic woodland retreat.

Ward is Northern Rother and the County Council is East Sussex
