Local knowledge

Living in Alresford
Alresford is a popular market town near Winchester, on the edge of the South Downs National Park. Visitors are enchanted by the beautiful Georgian architecture and feeling of true community spirit, not to mention the interesting history that has helped shape such a unique place. Unsurprisingly, it has been selected as the No 1 Best Place to live in the Countryside by The Sunday Times and voted Country Life’s ‘Favourite Market Town’ in the southeast. Architecturally, Alresford is a product of its past. While there is evidence of Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age occupation in the area, New Alresford (now Alresford) was founded in the 12th/13th century. It became a thriving market town, specialising in wool. However, in the 17th century, the town suffered tragedy as fire after a fire destroyed over a hundred buildings.
