Local knowledge

Living in Alton
Alton is a great place to live, with a fascinating history which can be seen in the buildings and surrounding countryside. The hoard of Iron Age coins and jewellery found nearby is now in the British Museum, but head to Alton’s own Curtis Museum to step back through the ages. Prehistoric tools, Roman bowls and Anglo-Saxon artefacts are alongside information about famous locals, Jane Austen and Fanny Adams. Aside from a rich history, Alton offers residents and visitors a choice of good schools, a range of shops, green spaces, sports centres, pubs, hotels, a regular Tuesday market and other markets and fairs. The surrounding area is beautiful and perfect for walks, while literature fans will want to visit Jane Austen’s house and museum in nearby Chawton. Alton Railway offers regular, direct trains to London and other hubs, and is also the terminus for the popular heritage Watercress Line.
