Local knowledge

Living in Kirby Londsdale
Kirkby Lonsdale is a market town in the south east corner of South Lakeland and is on the border with Lancashire and Yorkshire. It is one of the few settlements mentioned in the Doomsday Book from Cumbria and described as Cherchibi (village with a church). The town developed as a crossing point of the river where a number of drovers and packhorse routes converged. The town was granted its market charter in 1227 and weekly markets grew with livestock and other wares attracting people from around. By the early nineteenth century the market had begun to get congested and so it was moved to its current location in the Market Square where it remains to this day.
