The History of Sparkhill
There are two schools of thought as to where the name Sparkhill comes from. Throughout the Middle Ages, the Sparke family were the most esteemed residents of the region. There is also however a stream – the Spark Brook - which flows through the area and is still popular with walkers and cyclists.
Much of the new houses in the area were built along long, straight streets creating a distinctive pattern, and it continued to grow until in 1911 Sparkhill became part of Birmingham.
