One for the lovers of small UK seaside market towns, Modbury is somewhere that needs to be on your radar. This stunning area, nestled between the moor and the sea, has been crowned the smallest settlement in South Devon and is the perfect base to explore the South Hams and beyond.
The History of Modbury
The history of this market town is much bigger than the town itself! There is an estimated 1,600 population, which makes it very quaint – however, this settlement dates back to the Saxons and is even mentioned in the Doomsday Book. Modbury takes its name from the Saxon for “meeting place” (Moot Burgh) and has been home to two battles in the English Civil War.
