5 Aldon House is a very impressive major portion of an early 19th century mansion of mellow hamstone elevations, with Palladian revival and Palazzo architectural influences, under a Welsh slate roof.

Essentially Georgian in architectural detail (the house having been built circa 1801) and was the ancestral home of the Batten family. It then became a language school and in 2006 was converted into nine separate properties, each with an individual freehold.

Justifiably Listed Grade II, the property retains many period features, including intricate cornices and ornate ceilings throughout downstairs. In addition, there are decorative corbels, quality joinery, working shutters and attractive, original fireplace surrounds. With its excellent sized rooms, good ceiling heights and full-length windows, this is a special home indeed, just oozing quality and sophistication.

Beautifully presented and utterly immaculate throughout. The property has recently undergone a programme of redecoration, both inside and out. Two of the four en-suites have been refurbished, plus the sitting room fireplace has been lined, and a multi-fuel stove fitted.

An open porch leads to the entrance vestibule with encaustic tiled floor leading to the splendid and spacious reception hall, setting the tone for the rest of the house. There’s a striking carved oak cantilevered staircase with newel post finials of a lion holding a shield, plus plenty of space for a central hall table. Also off this room is the discreet cloakroom.

Beyond, is the sitting room with super views over the gardens through the rear window with stained glass heraldic panels. Either side of the window are recessed arched, and shelved niches. The timber fireplace surround and mantel, with oak panelled chimney breast provides a good focal point within this cosy and welcoming room. A porch opens to the rear garden.

Following on from the sitting room, is the elegant and impressive drawing room with open marble fireplace and canted bay, with full length sash windows, allowing the light to flood in, and views of the gardens to be enjoyed. This room is made for entertaining, and is perfect for family gatherings and parties, yet light the fire and close the original shutters and it becomes a wonderful private retreat.

The kitchen/dining room with decorative fireplace has southerly views from the full height sash windows and is a convivial space with ample room for a large table and chairs. This is a cook’s kitchen with plentiful base and wall units with a large island with granite worktops, with inset sink and five ring gas hob. Integrated appliances include a washing machine, dishwasher, two ovens and a microwave. In addition, there are two pull out larder units either side of which are two glazed back lit display cabinets. There is space, plumbing and connection for an American style fridge/freezer.

From the reception hall, stairs gracefully rise to the first-floor landing where there is the linen cupboard with hot water cylinder. The luxury of space is very much evident here and as on the ground floor, period features abound. The large and spacious galleried landing provides an additional seating area, which could work just as well as a study area with plenty of room for a desk and sofa.

The principal bedroom, which is just off south facing, is impressive with plenty of light and has lovely far-reaching countryside views. In addition, there are fitted wardrobes and a newly refurbished en-suite shower room. Also off the landing are three further good-sized bedrooms, all with en-suite facilities and all with lovely views. East facing bedroom three is currently fitted as a home office, with plentiful cupboards and shelving. A ceiling hatch with ladder gives access to a boarded loft room housing the two gas boilers. A window provides natural light.

Aldon House is approached via a sweeping, private, tree lined avenue to a circular gravelled forecourt. Surrounding the house and adjoining open countryside, are beautiful communal grounds of circa 3.5 acres, studded with mature trees, including holm oak, monterey pine, mulberry, and magnolia, providing a serene, bucolic, parkland setting. A gate gives access to ancient meadows and woodlands which surround the grounds, perfect for dog walking. There is even a tennis court (currently being renovated), for the residents’ use.

In addition, number 5 has its own private gardens comprising a good-sized area of lawn to the rear, with an open boundary adjoining the communal gardens, affording far reaching views. The private gardens continue to the south side of the property, bordered by beech hedging for privacy, which in turn leads to a private gravelled area, ideal for outside entertaining. A timber ledge and brace door gives access to the front of the house. There are beautifully planted and maintained flowering beds and borders plus climbing roses, and both white and lilac wisteria, all providing year-round colour. In a block of two, just a short distance away is the single garage. Adjacent is access to a substantial two room cellar, both having power and light. There is also a private parking space with ample visitors’ parking.

The lasting impression of this splendid property is its seclusion and peaceful setting yet being within easy reach of essential amenities.

Quietly situated within extensive parkland of circa 3.5 acres and approached by a long and sweeping lime tree avenue, surrounded by glorious south Somerset countryside, including Nine Springs country park which is easily accessible and within 5 minutes’ walk. All the amenities of Yeovil town centre are a short drive away and the A303 is within easy reach. The historic Abbey town of Sherborne is within 6 miles. Both towns offer a wide range of shopping, recreational and cultural activities together with the mainline stations (Waterloo from 2 ¼ hours). Taunton and the M5 is within 24 miles. Dorchester is within 19 miles and the world heritage Dorset coastline is less than 20 miles away.
