Lord Woolavington founded the Stud at the turn of the last century, transforming a former dairy farm with rolling chalk grassland, natural spring water and protection from poor weather by the South Downs into the Stud. All these factors provide a perfect location for breeding horses as shown by the track record of the Stud in producing high class racehorses. Lord Woolavington had great success with Hurry On who was the sire that put Lavington Stud “on the map”. He won six times including the St. Leger in 1916 at Newmarket. He was champion sire in 1926 and bred five winners of seven Classics, including the Derby winners Coronach, Captain Cuttle and Call Boy. In addition, he was three times leading sire of broodmares. Lady Macdonald-Buchanan inherited the Stud from her father in 1936 and developed the broodmare band at Lavington. The Stud has remained in the family since and in recent years bred In the Groove who won four Group 1 races and became champion Filly in Europe. Other recent notable winners of Group races that were raised or bred at the Stud include Sans Frontieres, Rosinka and Move Up.

The property has just under 340 acres in total with various stable yards with over 100 boxes, 9 residential properties and a series of barns with planning for 11 units.

Lavington Stud is situated in the heart of the South Downs National Park, not far from Cowdray Park Polo Grounds and nestling at the foot of the South Downs. Located about a mile to the east of the popular village of Graffham with its shop, recreational grounds, church, school and two public houses, the Stud and all the dwellings occupy a delightful and quiet location. There are more comprehensive services found in Petworth, Midhurst, Haslemere and Guildford.

Road and rail links are excellent with rail services from Haslemere to London Waterloo from 49 minutes. The A3 provides fast access to London and the national motorway network. London Gatwick (35 miles) and London Heathrow (48 miles) are within a short drive.

Schooling is excellent with Westbourne House and The Prebendal School at Chichester; Dorset House at Bury; Seaford College which neighbors Lavington Stud; Amesbury, St Edmund's and The Royal School at Hindhead. Bedales and Churchers at Petersfield, St Ives at Haslemere, Charterhouse and Cranleigh School are also not far.

Recreational opportunities are extensive with racing at Goodwood, Fontwell, Ascot, Sandown, Epsom and Kempton; Polo at Cowdray Park; Golf at Cowdray, Goodwood and the West Sussex at Pulborough; Motor sport and flying at Goodwood and sailing on the South Coast can be found at Bosham and Chichester Harbour.
