Probably the most spectacular woodland on the south east coast of England. A unique ancient woodland with 800m of prime Chichester Harbour frontage.
Extraordinarily rare combination of woodland and harbour with no public access.
Old Park Wood is a highly-renowned feature of Chichester Harbour, located just north of Bosham Hoe on the west side of the Fishbourne Channel, opposite Chichester and Birdham Pool marinas. Comprising approximately 95 acres of spectacular ancient woodland, Old Park Wood accounts for approximately two thirds of all ancient woodland on Chichester Harbour. With around 800 metres of private harbour frontage, it is an exceptionally rare shoreline woodland habitat on the South Coast of England, yet within easy reach of London and close to the historic city of Chichester.
At Old Park Wood, the deep blue colour and smell of the sea combines with the greens and scents of an ancient woodland, an unparalleled sensory combination. This uniqueness is reinforced by the absence of any public access rights. There are no public footpaths, bridleways or other access to the woodland. The England Coast Path does not pass near Old Park Wood, protecting the woodland from future intrusion. This extraordinary privacy creates an extremely rare and incredibly tranquil environment in this inspiring and dramatic location.
The history of Old Park Wood can be traced back over a thousand years. Throughout the 20th Century and until 2015, Old Park Wood was part of a local shoot, but in recent years, the current owner has invested in a regeneration and conservation programme with a professional forestry and ecology team. The success of this programme has been widely recognised providing an excellent platform for the future development of this peerless property.
Old Park Wood hosts a diverse range of flora and fauna, resulting from being an undisturbed ancient woodland. The core infrastructure is oak standards with hazel coppice, interspersed with other species including ash, sweet chestnut, birch and beech. There is an abundance of Butcher's Broom, a now rare plant, along with orchids, primroses and millions of native bluebells. The regeneration resulting from the reintroduced coppicing programme includes flowering bluebell bulbs which have been dormant for many years. This extraordinary habitat, bordering directly onto a large harbour, attracts an abundance of waterfowl, woodland birds, bats, deer and other wildlife.
A video of Old Park Wood, including the Bowling Green and foreshore, is available upon request.
