Property description & features

  • Tenure: Freehold
A fabulous detached cottage in its own delightful gardens and grounds and with single bank fishing on the River Frome.

THE PROPERTY
Approached via a very pretty tree lined driveway, first glimpses of Riverside Cottage are most impressive with its attractive façade under a pitched slate roof.
The property, which is not listed, is believed to have been built in the mid nineteenth century, and over the years has undergone many extensive programmes of works. From 1937 the property was the home of novelist, Sylvia Townsend Warner, who lived there with her companion, the poet Valentine Ackland. Sylvia wrote many novels including The Flint Anchor, The Salutation and Winter in the Air from this very property.
The property is now a truly magical detached cottage tucked away in a very peaceful location on the banks of the River Frome, which is heavily populated with wild Brown Trout and Grayling and often known as a 'fly fisher's dream.' The river is very well kept and is one of the best chalk streams in the southwest of England.
On first entering the property there is a real sense of charm and space with very well-presented accommodation, maintaining a range of original features. There is a large porch and hallway which leads directly into a wonderful snug/music room with a multi fuel stove and doors opening out to a balcony overlooking the river. The terrace is a delightful place to sit and watch trout, kingfishers and possibly even otters.
To the other side of the hallway is the living room, again with a multifuel stove, and leading into a wonderful garden room, currently used as a playroom. Like many rooms in the house, this has views over the extensive garden and river.
The family kitchen, which has been lovingly extended and renovated by the present owners is quite simply as good as it gets, with wonderful Indian slate flooring and incorporating a number of very attractive wall and base units. There is plenty of room for a breakfast/kitchen table and it forms a perfect hub to the house, accommodating a large woodburning stove. To the back of the kitchen is a separate utility room and fantastic study, also with views over the river.
The bedrooms are situated on the first floor with three in total, including a large principal bedroom with superb double aspect views of open countryside and the wonderful sound of the river flowing past below.
The garden is an absolute delight with a paved terrace ideal for al fresco dining. There is also a large lawned area, a substantial wildlife pond, a number of established trees and spring bulbs - a veritable utopia for adults and children alike. The main part of the garden faces south with well-stocked borders and islands. There is at least 100 yards of single bank fishing, a small fishing hut and a single garage with plenty of parking.
All in all, this is a truly unique and enchanting property with flexibility to extend and improve and in an idyllic and very convenient location.

LOCATION
The pretty hamlet of Frome Vauchurch is a short (5 minute) walk from the larger village Maiden Newton, surrounded by unspoilt countryside and just over 12 miles from Chesil Beach on the Jurassic Coast. Maiden Newton has a general stores/post office, newsagent, garage with shop, hardware store, fish & chip shop, primary school, St Mary's Parish Church, doctors' surgery, veterinary surgery and a railway station with trains to Dorchester, Weymouth, Bath and Bristol. Lying just over 8 miles south east is the county town of Dorchester and the village is also within easy access of the A37 to Yeovil. Both these towns have excellent shops, schools and mainline railway stations to London Waterloo. Dorchester town centre has an excellent range of facilities including shops, restaurants, public houses, supermarkets including a Waitrose and Tesco and Dorchester County Hospital. Also worth a mention is the vibrant development at Brewery Square with its cinema, bars, restaurants and leading shops.
