History
The church was designed by W G Rowan, of McKissack and Rowan, and constructed between 1875-1879. It is in the style of Alexander 'Greek' Thomson in blonde and red sandstone with slate roof. With three prominent elevations to the west, east and south which have raised Ionic porticos above a podium with a Doric entrance to the south. With its giant square tower the former church is a local landmark.
There is a later stone extension to the minor north elevation and further single storey extension at lower ground floor level. The former churn, including boundary walls and gate piers are listed Grade B. The interior of the building has been completely refurbished and includes two lifts and stairs. New floors have been formed, the walls dry lined and all the windows replaced. There are no interior period features remaining.
Location
Pollockshields has evolved over the last 150 years into one of the finest suburbs in Scotland. Its development was promoted by the original landowners, the Maxwells of Nether Pollock, who had been resident in Pollock House since the 18th century.
Shields Road is ideally placed for a range of local amenities including many thriving coffee shops, bars, delicatessens and restaurants, including renowned Six by Nico in the Pollockshields area. There are a number of parks in the area offering a host of recreational activities with Maxwell Park being a particular highlight. A little further afield there is Springfield Quay with Odeon Luxe Cinema, Alea Casino and many other restaurants and bars.
Also close at hand are excellent public transport links including Pollockshields West and East Stations offering regular services to Glasgow Central. Nearby Eglington Street offers quick access to Glasgow City Centre and the M77, M8 and M74 motorway links are also close by.
