Strachur is in southern Argyll at the sheltered confluence of highland glens and Loch Fyne, and Strathlachlan is the glen that connects Newton and Castle Lachlan and the minor road that carries on down the eastern side of Loch Fyne to Otter Ferry and further south to Portavadie and Tighnabruaich.
Higher Mid Village is set in generous gardens and from its west facing position there are panoramic views over Loch Fyne. The rear of the property offers lovely open aspects out over the woodlands of the glen.
Strachur (4.7 miles north) is a delightful and very pretty Loch Fyne side Argyllshire coastal village. Strachur and Loch Fyne are well known for their natural scenic beauty which has always drawn people to the area to live, holiday and enjoy weekend breaks.
The village has a Post Office and café, a retail service station, an excellent medical centre with in-house pharmacy, and a vibrant community hall, all of which cater for most everyday needs and requirements. Glasgow is about 66 miles distant and offers a full range of higher and further educational services as well as all the cultural and professional services normally connected with a major city.
There are a number of friendly restaurants and country pubs, all with menus that encompass the term “Scotland’s Natural Larder”; these include Loch Fyne Oyster Bar, The Creggans Inn and Inver Cottage Restaurant which is 1.4 miles away, within walking distance and on the shore of Loch Fyne.
Dunoon is approximately 22.2 miles away with Glasgow Airport at approximately 58 miles distant via Loch Lomond.
Primary schooling is available in Strachur and secondary schooling (with optional boarding) is available at Dunoon. The nearest independent school is Helensburgh at 43 miles.
The A83 and A82 provide access to central Scotland. Arrochar has a main line rail station with a service to and from Glasgow city centre and a sleeper to London. The frequent Western ferry service between McInroy’s Point and Hunters Quay provides alternative travel to Glasgow and the west of mainland Scotland.
Situated on the outskirts of Scotland’s first National Park, the area offers much in the way of outdoor pursuits including cycle routes, challenging hill climbs, walks and several golf courses. The recently established Cowal Way stretches from Portavadie in the west and travels eastwards for 31 miles through some of the most dramatic and picturesque sea and mountain landscapes in the west coast.
Sea, river and loch fishing are also available in the area as are a number of commercially run shoots. Some of the local estates allow stalking by arrangement.
For sailors, the sea lochs of the west of Scotland offer safe sheltered anchorages as well as spectacular coastal sailing; there are marina and chandlery services at Rhu, Inverkip, Portavadie and Dunoon.

It is possible to travel to Newton from Glasgow using two different routes:
By Car
From Glasgow city centre leave in a westerly direction on the M8 motorway. Continue for 18 miles taking junction 30 following signs Erskine Bridge. Proceed over the bridge and turn left onto the A82. Continue on the A82 for 26 miles up the side of Loch Lomond to Tarbet. Turn left at Tarbet onto the A83 and continue for 13 miles before turning left onto the A815. Travel for 9 miles to reach Strachur. Turn right onto the A886 towards Tighnabruaich and after 4 miles turn right and follow the road down the hill (sweeping left) towards Newton. On entering the village proceed along the shore road, to find Higher Mid Village located up the second lane on the left hand side.
By Boat
From Glasgow city centre leave in a westerly direction on the M8 motorway. Continue for 21 miles to arrive at Port Glasgow. Follow signs Greenock and Gourock on the A770 for 8 miles to reach the Western Ferry terminal at McInroys Point. Take the ferry to Hunters Quay Dunoon. Leave the terminal and turn right on the A815 through Sandbank. Continue on the A815 for 14 miles passing Loch Eck to reach Strachur. Turn right onto the A886 towards Tighnabruaich and after 4 miles turn right and follow the road down the hill (sweeping left) towards Newton. On entering the village proceed along the shore road, to find Higher Mid Village located up the second lane on the left hand side.
