History - A Brief History

As the population of the village increased it became clear that a larger school was necessary, in 1870 a committee was set up by Squire Noel and the Rev. Harry A Woodgate. Squire Noel presented the site which was then occupied by the Old Queen's Head Inn. The school was paid for by the local inhabitants and was built of Belbroughton red brick ornamented with blue strings, according to the Bromsgrove Messenger report of Saturday 26th June 1875, the week the school was officially opened. There were delays in completing the school due to lack of funds to carry out the original plans, the death of Rev. Harry A Woodgate and dissent within the Committee, but the school was completed in 1874.

The Belbroughton Almanack 1874 wrote: " This is a handsome brick building. It offers in every respect a pleasing contrast to the venerable, though unsightly, old "Queen's Head" which it has superseded. The interior appears to be both commodious and convenient, and will supply a want long felt here, a good room for public meetings, entertainment etc.

Mr Chatwin, Birmingham is Architect, and Mr Thomas Baylis, Belbroughton builder. Mr Bayliss's agreement for clearing the site, and building this school and a new school at Fairfield totalled £785 - £565 for Belbroughton and £220 for Fairfield.
