The existing site displays a number of original features which were retained after closure of the canal. The property is now offered to the market with recently obtained planning consent for substantial extension/re-development, the proposal designed to take full advantage of the fine outlook over the delightful, established grounds which extend to approximately 0.6 acres, including delightful, mature woodland towards the rear boundary. The property is offered to the market with NO VENDOR CHAIN. The proposed new layout comprises Reception Hall, formal Living Room, Study, Cloakroom/WC, full-width open-plan Kitchen/Dining/Sitting Room plus Utility. THISTLE CLOSE TIMELINE In 1740, a map of Barnby Basin shows only fields, named as Thistle Close and Bridge Close and the original Silkstone Beck river course. In 1809, the Silkstone Waggonway (railway) was built by the Barnsley Canal Navigation Co. to transport coal for the Silkstone Colliery, some 2.5 miles to Barnby Basin. The canal, known as the Barnsley Canal, started in the Basin and was built around the same time to transport the coal over the 14.5 miles and 15 locks through Barnsley to join the Aire and Calder Navigation Waterway (canal) at Wakefield. The Waggonway, a horse drawn metal railway on stone sleepers, carried 3.5 ton waggons of coal to 4 sidings, constructed on the site of the field named Thistle Close (and now the garden) and used for unloading coal prior to transport on the canal.

An 1841 census shows one John Tooley living at the cottage, Barnaby Basin, at the very end of the canal and responsible for maintaining the correct water levels in the waterway.

The internal layout of this cottage, now named Thistle Close after the original field name, suggests the possibility of being the tallyman's office and house.

The Waggonway passed close to the northwest side of the property to end in sidings alongside the canal, in what is now the garden area. Another historically significant building also lies within the garden area. A single storey small birch cottage, also on the northwest side of the canal, may have housed boat builders and their equipment. This is now listed as a storage area or garage. A large mooring stone, rescued from the canal bottom is displayed alongside.

The cottage, Thistle Close in Cawthorne Basin, was purchased from the Estate circa 1920 and used by the family to develop a market gardening business. Three large greenhouses were constructed along the site of the railway siding. The last of these were de-commissioned and dismantled in approximately 1970. Thistle Close is now a family home with a large garden and planning permission for an extension. The house, garage and garden all contain historically significant features.
