THE HISTORY...

Teversal Manor is a magnificent country home with a fascinating and colourful history. Believed to date back in part to at least 1612, the imposing Grade II Listed mansion was originally home to the High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire. Since then it has evolved in its structure and had many notable owners and interesting connections. For a long time, it was in the ownership of the Carnarvon family; the 5th Earl of Carnarvon was, of course, best known for his role in the excavation of Tutankhamun's tomb.

A LITERARY CONNECTION...

Teversal Manor is also famous for playing an important role in literary history. It is said to be the inspiration for Wragby Hall in DH Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover. In the first world war, the house was offered for use by Elizabeth Dowager Duchess of Carnarvon, aka Elsie, for the rehabilitation of Belgian refugees and soldiers. They put a slope down to the second garden terrace for wheelchairs and it is said that gave Lawrence the idea for Constance’s husband Clifford, who was in a wheelchair. In the book, the village was called ‘Tevershall.' Published in 1928, DH Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover was banned in the UK for more than 30 years because of its explicit scenes. Since the famous trial in 1960 over its eventual publication, it has been the subject of a number of films and television series.

THE PROPERTY...

The house is in need of major updating and improvement but lends itself well to this with a fine range of accommodation with two particularly large reception rooms, which interconnect and make marvellous entertainment or living rooms, both facing South and looking out across the stunning gardens.

The kitchen, also facing South and overlooking the grounds, has a range of Miele appliances. A second kitchen is situated across the hall and could be turned into a utility room or large pantry.

The large main entrance hallway connects all of the ground floor living space and, at the opposite end to the kitchen, there is a boot room along with toilet and wash facilities.

The first floor has six large bedrooms, five of those overlooking the grounds to the rear, three of which benefitting from en-suite facilities. The first floor space is complete with an area for a large family bathroom.

LOCATION...

Situated close to the Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire border and just three miles to the North of Mansfield, Teversal is a small conservation village lying in undulating countryside, within easy reach of a number of main commercial centres including Sutton in Ashfield, South Normanton, Alfreton and Chesterfield. The M1 motorway lies only a few miles to the West and Sutton in Ashfield, only 1 1/2 miles to the South, has a full range of local facilities and amenities including shops, schools and public transport services.
