Description: - The Chelwood Vachery is a substantial country estate situated on the Ashdown Forest to the edge of the village of Nutley. Built in 1906 for Sir Stuart Samuel, a banker and Liberal MP, who employed William Flockhart to build this new mansion and Leonard Rome Guthrie was employed to landscape the grounds to include the construction of a series of terraces with sandstone retaining walls, a rose garden, lily ponds and water channels, bosquet, tennis and croquet lawns and a kitchen garden. Samuel later added a rockery, and established an arboretum and an extensive collection of rhododendrons.
In 1925 the property was bought by Mr FJ Nettleford who was also a rhododendron enthusiast and a further collection was added. There was later a period of neglect during World War II, when the mansion was used as a military hospital for British and Allied troops. The mansion was passed to Nettleford's son in 1955, who sold it to British American Tobacco Company Ltd as its management training centre. During the company's occupancy a new wing and lecture theatre were added to the mansion and estate buildings were converted for staff and guest accommodation. The estate was sold in 1994 (Sales Particulars 1993) for development as a private, residential estate. The mansion and ornamental gardens remain in divided, private ownership, with the surrounding woodland that was once part of Samuel's estate now being owned by the Ashdown Forest Trust.
1 Main House has a wonderful main entrance with a set of impressive double wooden doors opening to an entrance that leads to a utility/w/c and opens to a large entrance hall. Further ground floor accommodation comprises a large kitchen/dining room being a fantastic space of entertaining friends and family with access to a cellar via a floor hatch. A substantial reception room is situated to the rear enjoying an open fire and southerly views and access to the rear private garden. The first floor leads to three bedrooms each with their own en-suite bathrooms and the principle bedroom enjoys a walk in wardrobe, roof terrace and breath-taking views across the Ashdown Forest. A fourth bedroom is located on the 2nd floor which is particularly ideal for a teenager also benefitting from a walk in wardrobe and a further en-suite. Outside is a long driveway leading to the Chelwood Vachery where you find plenty of areas for parking with this property also benefitting from a double garage.

Each reading is based on the highest predicted speed of any major broadband network for services that deliver the download speeds. The following are the different readings that we may display:
Basic: Up to 30 Mbit/s
Super-fast: Between 30 Mbit/s and 300 Mbit/s
Ultra-fast: Over 300 Mbit/s
The data is updated three times a year. The checker results are predictions and should not be regarded as guaranteed. For more information, see: https://checker.ofcom.org.uk/en-gb/about-checker#Answer_0_2
Mobile phone signal availability and predicted strength
Mobile signal predictions are provided by the four UK mobile network operators: EE, O2, Three and Vodafone. Predictions can vary significantly from the coverage you may actually experience as a result of local factors (especially terrain). Ofcom has tested the actual coverage provided in various locations around the UK to help ensure that these predictions are reasonable. The values shown against a property can be broken down as follows:
Clear: No bars, no signal predicted
Red: One bar, reliable signal unlikely
Amber: Two bars, may experience problems with connectivity
Green: Three bars, likely to have good coverage and receive a data rate to support basic web services
Enhanced: Full bars, likely to have good coverage indoors and to receive an enhanced data rate to support multimedia services
Energy Performance data and Internal floor area: obtained on March 9, 2020 from The Energy Performance of Buildings (Certificates and Inspections) (England and Wales) Regulations 2007 or the Home Report if in relation to a residential property in Scotland.
