It has been more than 13 years now since Nicky and Wayne moved into their splendid house on Sandbrier Close and Nicky still remembers the moment she knew it would become their next home. “We had arranged to see 10 houses in one day and when we got to this one I really wasn’t sure at all because I could see it would be quite a project for us,” she admits. “But I walked into the drawing room and saw Wayne sitting on the sofa and looking out at the garden and I said to him: ‘You’ve come home haven’t you?” I knew at that moment that he loved everything about it and that with some work it really could become everything we wanted it to be.”

Rooms

OPEN SPACE
Wayne himself also recalls exactly what drew him to the house so powerfully. “It was set in a part of Milton Keynes that had something of a village feel about it – it was so much quieter than other places we had looked at and there were lovely places to walk close by – the house itself had lots of open space around it and the garden was a really good size. The rooms were also really large.” The couple also loved the fact there was a gate from the garden that opened on to a redway leading to parks and swathes of green open space. “It all felt very private,” Nicky says. “We knew we would have our own space here while also being part of a small, friendly community – and it certainly has worked out like that.”

STYLISH INTERIOR
Work to renovate the house began immediately and together they have created the bright, contemporary living space they were seeking. They replaced doors, windows, bathrooms, the heating system and carpets. They had rooms reskimmed and redecorated in neutral shades to let their brightly coloured artworks stand out. Karndean was laid in the kitchen and utility room and these two spaces were given the same, seamless look. “We tried to give the house a synergy throughout,” Nicky explains. “Hammonds fitted wardrobes in the bedrooms; the flooring and bathrooms all match.” Wayne adds: “We had high-tech features such as a remote control for the fire and an autofill for the bath installed.”

EASY LIVING
The butterfly-shaped house, which is filled with natural light, is entered via an airy reception hall. To one side this leads to the family or media room. “This is where Wayne keeps his Xbox and we have surround sound speakers so it is also a great place for watching films.” In the other wing is the enormous, triple-aspect drawing room, with French windows on to the garden. “This is also a lovely room, especially if we are entertaining – although, to be honest, people do seem to always end up in the kitchen when we have parties!” Nicky observes. The kitchen, with a breakfast bar, opens into the hall, utility room and dining room. There is also a ground-floor cloakroom. “We have really enjoyed having the kitchen and dining room as two separate spaces, so we can shut the door when we are having dinner parties,” they agree. “New owners may wish to look into opening them up, however, to create one large space.”

GLORIOUS SUNSHINE
The sense of space and light continues upstairs. A generous landing gives on to the master bedroom, which has an en suite shower room, as well as four more bedrooms and the family bathroom. One of the bedrooms is currently used as a home office and the couple have mulled over the idea of converting this into another en-suite bathroom. The house has been a magnificent place in which to welcome friends and family for barbecues, Christmases and all sorts of parties, as well as to simply relax. “In the morning the sun comes in at the front and then later on it is to the back of the house. We can sit in the garden in the summer and have a gin and tonic in the sunshine or the shade, depending on the heat – the garden is also like an extension to the house in the morning, when we sit outside and have coffee.”

A RELAXING HOME
Nicky and Wayne will miss the easy combination of quiet living and convenience their home has afforded them. They have savoured their proximity to good transport links, including motorways, and excellent shopping areas, while also having beautiful places to walk right on the doorstep. Wayne says: “We have really enjoyed being here and the process of redoing everything to make the house feel brand new.” And Nicky adds: “This has been such a happy home. It is so spacious and immediately gives you the feeling that you can really breathe and relax.”
