Featured across the pages of a national, glossy homes magazine, the impressive, four-bedroom property on Church Road is a stylish and beautifully finished family house.

Rooms

The Story
It is not surprising to learn that the gorgeous house on Church Road in Chavey Down has been photographed and featured by one of the country’s leading glossy homes magazines. It was in 2019 that the property appeared in 25 Beautiful Homes after having been extended and completely renovated by its current owners. “We bought the house in 2015 when we decided we wanted to move out of London,” one of them explains. “It sat in a very large garden and felt very secluded and had all the space we wanted. We are both originally from Cape Town in South Africa and we love very open-plan living. This house held all the potential we needed for creating that kind of arrangement here.”

ARCHITECT-DESIGNED
Thought to date back to the 1900s and to have originally possibly been a greengrocer’s shop, the property now has two storeys and four bedrooms. The current owners set to work on it not long after moving in, initially stripping it out and working with an architect to open it up and create the bright, airy home they were looking for. They later decided to extend, doubling the size of the kitchen dining room and adding a utility room. They also installed the upstairs bathroom and added a studio out in the wooded garden for use as a home office. “This is a great place to work as it is so tucked away – but it could be used for all kinds of different purposes,” she suggests.

FAMILY LIFE
At the heart of the house is the expansive, open-plan living area, which now encompasses a reception hall and the capacious sitting room. There is ample space for comfortable seating and the generous room features beautiful, reclaimed wood on the floor and a textured stone-effect feature wall. “We also installed a wood burner in here. This is one of my favourite features of the house – it is just lovely when we have it burning in the winter months,” she says. This stylish space flows easily into the chic kitchen dining room to the rear of the house and into the conservatory to one side. “We use the conservatory as a playroom, which works brilliantly if you have young children,” she admits. “They can still be part of everything that is going on but they have space to play and we can keep an eye on them.”

NATURAL LIGHT
With its bi-folding doors, the chic, orangery-style kitchen dining room, which has a vaulted and adjoins the utility room, flows seamlessly on to the garden. An abundance of windows and the roof lantern also help to bring the natural light flooding in. At the centre of the space is an island that houses the cranberry-coloured Rangemaster cooker and incorporates a breakfast bar. Like the rest of the house, the room is decorated in neutral shades of Farrow & Ball paint. “This part of the house has worked incredibly well for us – it is where we spend most of our time,” she says. “It is also a great space for entertaining because of the way it opens up into the garden and the sitting room.”

FRIENDS AND FAMILY
To the left of the reception hall is a ground-floor bedroom that could equally have an alternative use if required for another purpose by new owners. This could, for example, be an ideal study. Two more bedrooms, a family bathroom, with an exquisite freestanding bath, and a snug are all also downstairs, tucked away in a neat wing, on the other side of the house. “This has been ideal for guests as they have had their own space,” she says. The master suite currently takes up the entire first floor. The owners have it arranged as an enormous dressing room, bedroom and en suite bathroom. “You could very easily have two bedrooms up here, however,” she suggests. “New owners could also look into the possibility of extending out over the kitchen if they wished.”

HAPPY TIMES
The owners have enjoyed life so much in Chavey Down that they have decided to stay close by when they move. “This is such a great area,” she agrees. “It is very easy to travel into London and we have great access to good schools, shops and transport links. Windsor is close by and we have enjoyed being able to get to the Lexicon Centre as well. This has been a lovely place to live. We have been very happy here.”

SETTING THE SCENE
A driveway to the side of the house offers ample off-street parking. This leads to a gated garden, with additional driveway parking and a garage. The large rear garden is leafy, with areas of lawn, for children to play out on, and a terrace for outdoor entertaining and relaxation. Within the grounds there is a garden studio that is currently used as a home office.

Amber: Two bars, may experience problems with connectivity
Green: Three bars, likely to have good coverage and receive a data rate to support basic web services
