Property description & features

  • Tenure: Freehold
  • Flat conifer woodland
  • Excellent access
  • 5.5 acres

Nantbele woodland is a primarily conifer woodland, and unusually, for woods in Wales, it is completely flat! It is set well back from the nearest roads, so is quiet and peaceful. It was planted 16 years ago, after felling of the previous crop that was planted in the 1950s on what was grazing land before that. It has been planted with a mixture of Norway Spruce, Sitka Spruce, and mixed broadleaves, especially willow (see map below for full details). There is a reasonable amount of young broadleaf natural regen around the boundaries of the wood, and in any places where there are gaps in the conifers. A new owner could continue to manage the wood for timber value in which case it could benefit from some thinning, sometime in the next few years, or could favour broadleaf species, and perhaps aim for a gradual transition to a greater level of broadleaf tree cover. The size of many of the trees makes it still possible to work with hand tools only.

There are numerous small ponds throughout the wood, particularly where the ground was mounded for planting, and these could be enhanced and extended.

Access: An excellent stone track, suitable for any vehicle at any time of the year runs from the main gate to a parking/turning/timber stacking area just inside the wood. A few walkways through the wood have been created by side pruning the trees, and more of these could easily be created with very little effort.

Public access: There are no public footpaths or rights of public access into any part of Nantbele.

Sporting rights: Included.

Mineral rights: Included, except as reserved by statute.

Wildlife: if you are lucky enough to be at the woods at the right time, at dusk in the Autumn, you may be able to watch a spectacular murmuration...with thousands of starlings swooping overhead. And if you are even luckier, you may get to experience the incredible sound after they settle in the trees (see video)

Local area and history: Nantbele is 11 miles north of Carmarthen, a market town since Roman times, and the A40/A48 provide easy access to the M4 to the east, and the Pembrokeshire coast to the west. The market town of Newcastle Emlyn is just five miles to the north, and there is a great range of country pubs, cafes and restaurants within a few miles of Nantbele. Some of the beaches of the Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion coast - Llangrannog, Mwnt, Poppit Sands, Aberporth, Newport Parrog - are not far away.

The National Botanic Garden of Wales, 20 miles to the south-east, is well worth a visit.

Nantbele could be translated from Welsh as Pine Marten Stream, but it is not known if that is the origin of the name.

Boundaries: The south-western and south-eastern boundaries are fenced from adjoining farmland. The north-western boundary is formed by the stream. The north-eastern boundary is a large earthbank on the south-east side of the access track (but not the north-western side).

Photographs: were taken October and November 2023.

Viewing: You are welcome to view at any time, but please make sure you have a copy of the sales particulars with you, on paper or saved to your phone, as there may be very little mobile phone signal when you arrive at the wood. While much of the wood is dry underfoot, there are pockets of wet land, and numerous small ponds particularly where the ground was mounded for planting, so waterproof boots are recommended.

Each reading is based on the highest predicted speed of any major broadband network for services that deliver the download speeds. The following are the different readings that we may display:

    Basic: Up to 30 Mbit/s
    Super-fast: Between 30 Mbit/s and 300 Mbit/s
    Ultra-fast: Over 300 Mbit/s

The data is updated three times a year. The checker results are predictions and should not be regarded as guaranteed. For more information, see: https://checker.ofcom.org.uk/en-gb/about-checker#Answer_0_2

Mobile phone signal availability and predicted strength

Mobile signal predictions are provided by the four UK mobile network operators: EE, O2, Three and Vodafone. Predictions can vary significantly from the coverage you may actually experience as a result of local factors (especially terrain). Ofcom has tested the actual coverage provided in various locations around the UK to help ensure that these predictions are reasonable. The values shown against a property can be broken down as follows:

Clear: No bars, no signal predicted
Red: One bar, reliable signal unlikely
Amber: Two bars, may experience problems with connectivity
Green: Three bars, likely to have good coverage and receive a data rate to support basic web services
Enhanced: Full bars, likely to have good coverage indoors and to receive an enhanced data rate to support multimedia services
