Features and description

  • Tenure: Freehold

Roundbank Wood is a very mature broadleaf woodland with many veteran oak trees that really give the feeling that it is an ancient woodland. One tree in particular that stands out from most is a Yew tree that is growing on a rocky face, that has exposed roots. It's fascinating how the roots weave in and out of the rock face. Beech, hazel, lime, silver birch, ash, rowan, and holly are also found in this wood. The wood is quite spectacular, with sandstone rock faces, and a wonderful level plateau in the centre of the wood, with a completely secluded valley next to it, either of which would make a great location for camping.

Access: There is easy access to all areas of Roundbank Wood, as the trees are mature and well spaced, and ground vegetation is limited by the tree canopy. A good track leads from the entrance gate along the western edge of the wood, allowing access on foot. The track then continues along the southern edge of the wood, where there is a usable, but undeveloped point of access, just opposite the gateways into the two meadows below the wood. The track then continues around the adjacent wood, before looping back on the eastern side to the main vehicle access into the wood, where the track ends at the small valley, next to the central plateau.

Public access: There are no public footpaths or rights of public access into Roundbank Wood.

Sporting rights: Included.

Mineral rights: Included, except as reserved by statute.

Covenants: in common with the neighbouring woodlands, there is a covenant designed to ensure that all can have quiet and peaceful enjoyment of their woodland.

Local area and history: Roundbank Wood is situated near the Iron Bridge Gorge World Heritage Site where the Industrial Revolution began. The first ever cast iron bridge in the world was given Royal consent to be built here in 1776. Ironbridge has many museums, pubs and restaurants that front onto the River Severn, as well as the famous bridge itself. Much Wenlock is also very close by, which is very picturesque with good shops and local pubs.

Wildlife: Deer are known to frequent the woods, and fallow deer may often be seen wandering between the trees. The woods are home to a variety of birds, and woodpeckers, Jay, Raven, Blackbird, Wren, Blue tit, Great tit, Robin, Goldcrest, Blackcap and Spotted Owl have all been seen or heard.

Boundaries: The western and south-western boundaries are formed by the main access track, The northern boundary is fenced from adjoining farm land. The remainder of the boundaries are indicated by purple paint marks on trees. These are a bit faded in places making them tricky to spot, so have been supplemented by orange tape at several points (see photographs).

Photographs: were taken September 2023.
