Woodland

Coed Maedoc is a compact broadleaf woodland with a couple of small streams adding to the attractiveness. It is named for St Aidan to whom the small ancient church in Llawhaden is dedicated, and nestles in a sheltered spot, with views out over a bucolic scene of gently rolling hills topped by the impressive remains of the 12th century Llawhaden Castle, originally a bishop's palace (see the second photograph).

Coed Maedoc is almost entirely broadleaf, with some good mature ash and oak specimens but also younger ash, birch, beech and oak. There is also hazel and holly which supply good foraging for birds and wildlife, and the streams are also a great magnet for wildlife.

An old forestry track leads off the main track, down a gentle slope to the entrance of Coed Maedoc and continues into the woodland, ensuring good access right into the wood. Making your way further into the wood, the ground flattens and the majority of the woodland is good and reasonably level, making it ideal for family camping or woodland activities

Access: The woodland, part of the extensive Drim Wood, sits in the crook of a large hairpin bend of the main woodland access track, an excellent stoned track which runs through Drim Wood directly from the main road.

Public access: None, The main access track that passes by the entrance to the wood is a public footpath, but it is still quite secluded, as much of the wood cannot be seen from the path..

Sporting rights: Included.

Mineral rights: Included, except as reserved by statute.

Covenants: in common with the neighbouring woodlands, there is a covenant designed to ensure that all can have quiet and peaceful enjoyment of their woodland.

Local area and history: The nearby town of Narberth has a fantastic range of independent shops as well as pubs, cafes and restaurants and many fabulous parts of the Pembrokeshire coastline are less than half an hours drive away.

Wildlife: A wide variety of birds can be seen and heard around the wood, and larger animals such as badgers and foxes will be sure to pass through.

Boundaries: The eastern and north-western boundaries are formed by the main access track. The majority of the southern boundary is fenced from adjoining farmland, with the remainder being separated from adjoining woodland by a line of marker stakes. All boundaries are further indicated by blue paint on posts and trees, but this has faded quite a bit in places (see photos) and has been supplemented by some orange tape.

DIRECTIONS

Take the A40 westwards from Carmarthen towards Narberth, bypassing St Clears and Whitland.

Approximately 5 miles past Whitland turn right onto the B4313.

Follow this road for 1 mile and then turn left, signposted to Llawhaden.

Stay on this minor road for 1 mile, crossing the bridge.

Once over the bridge, turn right and continue through Holgan hamlet.

Soon you will see the gated entrance to the woodland on your left, a large Forests.co.uk Woodlands for Sale sign just after the turning. There is a lay-by about 200 yards further up the road where you can park when viewing to avoid blocking the gate.

Follow the track through the woodland on foot. After the track hairpin bends to the left you will see the approach to the entrance to Coed Maedoc on your left. There is a ridestop and wooden name board at the entrance.
