The site was bought by the current owners in 2008, who then set about creating their dream country house over the following three years. With rendered and painted exterior walls under a slate roof, The Retreat's design combines rural charm and modern family life. The rear of the house faces south-west taking in the fantastic views across the Exe Valley and it has wide, tall, double-glazed windows to allow the interior to be filled with natural light and to make the most of the views.
The two large reception rooms downstairs are both fitted with bi-fold doors that can be opened to the garden in fine weather creating a fantastic space for both family and entertaining. There is programmable underfloor heating throughout the ground floor, a log burner in the living room and the addition of an oil fuelled 4-oven AGA in the kitchen ensures this property is always
warm in the cold winter months. The kitchen is fully fitted with a built in dishwasher and space for an electric range cooker with plenty of room for a separate dining and seating area.
Upstairs there are a total of four double bedrooms and two bathrooms. The main bedroom has an outlook to die for and an en suite bathroom, with the remaining three bedrooms sharing the family bathroom. The house also incorporates a large attic space with potential to be converted into a large fifth bedroom or a studio/office with plumbing pre-installed to create an en suite, third bathroom.
Gardens and Grounds
The Retreat is approached off a little-used, country lane via a 70 yard-long drive that leads to an extensive gravel parking and turning area in front of the house with space for several vehicles. To one side of the parking area and a good distance from the house is a large garage block incorporating a double garage, workshop and gym. Like the house, the garage block has plenty of room in the roof space with potential to create further accommodation if required, subject to obtaining the necessary consents. The grounds of the property amounts to just over an acre. Apart from an area alongside the drive, the garden extends predominantly out in front of the house and partly to one side of it. It is bounded by mature field hedging dotted at intervals with native, broadleaf trees and to minimise maintenance is grassed with no beds to look after. A very deep, paved terraced extends out from the front of the house and along its full width to provide a large space for outside dining and barbeques, with direct access to the house through its bi-fold doors.
The Retreat has an elevated setting overlooking the Exe Valley. The village of Cove is spread out and The Retreat is located a short distance from the main road up Cove Hill. Cove's chapel closed a number of years ago but locally, Bampton and Stoodleigh both have churches. The Exeter Inn pub is around a mile from The Retreat and nearby Bampton offers an excellent range of shops, pubs, takeaways and restaurants.
The historic town of Tiverton, which is the commercial and administrative centre of the Mid Devon district, is just 10 minutes away by car and can meet most day to day requirements. Local transport links are good too with the
A361, A396 and J27 M5 within easy reach and Tiverton Parkway has direct rail services to Exeter (15 minutes) and Waterloo (1 hour 52 minutes). Exeter Airport is half an hour away offering a daily service to London City Airport (1 hour).
The area also has a selection of popular schools from both the state and independent sectors, including Blundell's School and Blundell's Preparatory School in Tiverton.
