Features and description
- Tenure: Freehold
Grist Wood is a wonderfully mixed, mature woodland set in the High Weald AONB. Towering oak, open glades and planting at various stages all help to create a diverse space.
Chestnut coppice to the north and the extensive hazel coppice to the south are all spanned by tall oaks. Through parts are private tracks, revealing ash, maple, alder, sycamore, beech, holly and silver birch trees. The boundary on the south-east side overlooks a meadow allowing lots of light into the wood. Recent coppicing of about four acres, has greatly encouraged the wildflowers to emerge; in particular foxglove, and the somewhat lesser known ragged robin. Various shallow streams flow through the eastern side of the woodland further encouraging a wide range of wildlife such as deer, badgers, wild pigs, foxes and a host of different birds.
There are numerous clearings within the woodland including a camping area, fire pit and various storage shelters, ideal for woodland activities.
The local village of Peasmarsh with all it has to offer is just a few minutes away. Go a little further, about five miles or so and you will find Great Dixter House, famous for its gardens owned for many years by the renowned garden writer, Christopher Lloyd. The historic town of Rye is also just a short drive making Grist Wood ideally situated for exploring local walks and the coast.
Ward is Eastern Rother and the county council is East Sussex
