- An attractive mixed woodland within cycling distance from Colchester
From where you park your car when viewing the walk to the Gallica Wood takes you along an undulating stone track though areas of private orchards and pasture. Once you reach the woodland sanctuary you have already started your adventure.
The woodland is wonderfully secure and offers plenty of spots to disappear from sight and set up camp for the day or overnight stays.
This area of Essex is truly beautiful with gently rolling countryside. A great mix of open farmland and small woodlands. Over the years it has inspired many artists including Constable.
Whilst having a wonderful feeling of seclusion the woodland is close to some major towns. Colchester 4 miles. Sudbury 10 miles. Ipswich 15 miles. A12 3.5 miles. (All distances are approximate).
Description: Trees
The woodland is a patch work of mixed English hardwoods, intersected by rides and glades and includes oak, ash, and beech.
Description: Wildlife
This woodland has a wonderfully natural feel. The surrounding area has Red, Fallow, Roe and Muntjac deer. The main deer species seen at Gallica Wood are Muntjac who were introduced from Southern China, where they evolved in a tropical environment and the females give birth all year round. This adaptation continues in chilly England where very young fawns can be seen even in the middle of winter. They look rather similar in colour and size to hares. When fully grown, Muntjac, or to be strictly accurate, Reeves’ Muntjac are the size of large dogs. In addition, when in season, to attract a mate the females bark very much like dogs, and they put me in mind of Tony Blackburn’s ‘Arnold’ whose somewhat metallic barks woofed from our transistor radios from 1967 and through the 1970s. This rather odd barking can be heard anywhere in the woodland.
Numerous other mammals can be seen here including foxes and badgers, whilst the tree canopy supports a wide variety of bird species.
Description: Features
The woodland is relatively level with some open areas. A bench has been placed centrally and is a perfect spot to sit and enjoy the woodland. Hedging and fencing ensures that the wood is very private.
Description: Access, tracks and footpaths
The woodland is accessed via an excellent stone track which provides all year vehicle access directly from the highway. A footpath runs along the western and eastern sides of the wood, these are fenced and hedged ensuring the woods privacy.

Dedham Vale is an area that has been an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty since 1970. It is located on the border between the counties of Suffolk and Essex in southeastern England. The area covers a 90km2 area on both sides of the River Stour. It is an open and culturally influenced agricultural landscape that also includes the village of Dedham. Artist John Constable grew up in nearby East Bergholt and has depicted Dedham Vale in several landscape paintings, such as The Vale of Dedham (1828).
