History - Although the oldest parts of the house date back to the 17th century and the Civil War, and it is located in a conservation area, the house is not a listed building. For many years it served as the village shop. During the war the front room opened as a pork-butcher’s shop, run by William Maycock the landlord of the adjacent inn The Bear.
