Walking through the house on Tamworth Road you could be forgiven for thinking you’d stepped on to the pages of a glassy homes magazine. The four-bedroom house has been exquisitely finished throughout and today presents accommodation that is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also of a high quality and extremely practical to live in. “When we first saw the house seven years ago, we were drawn to it because it was in a sunny position, on a quiet cul-de-sac and it had a really nice feel to it,” she recalls. “It was a good size for us but we knew we could upgrade it and transform it into the perfect home for our family – and that is what we have done.”

Rooms

BY DESIGN
It was nine months, in fact, between buying the property and moving in, she recalls. Extensive renovations were carried out from top to bottom, as they undertook replumbing, rewiring and redecorating work, and also replaced bathrooms, the kitchen and flooring. “We removed the wall between the kitchen and dining room to make one lovely large space with doors on to the garden.” Work to the house also saw them install an eye-catching oak and glass staircase, add en suite shower room to one bedroom and create a magnificent master suite, complete with a sumptuous bathroom and dressing area. They have also transformed part of the garage into a useful utility space and extended out to add a family room. “This has been an excellent place for the children to do their homework and spend time with their friends,” she says. “I also work from home in here.”

RELAXING ROOMS
The detached house, which has been rendered and clad in timber to give it a softer appearance, is set back from the road by a generous driveway, offering ample, off-road parking and access to the integral garage. There is a central entrance hall, with a downstairs cloakroom to the right and the sitting room to the left. This exquisite space features a beautiful built-in storage wall, which like much of the rest of the paintwork in the house is in Farrow & Ball. Finished in a gorgeous blue shade, it is opposite a feature wall in an elegant print. “This is a relaxing room, where it is nice to spend time with friends or to watch television in the evening.”

INDOOR-OUTDOOR LIVING
There is a useful door into the garage from the hall. One end of the garage now features useful cupboards, a sink and the washing machine. The kitchen dining room and family room are to the back of the house. The two spaces adjoin and each has glass doors that can be opened up to the garden on fine days. “It is a German Häcker kitchen, with brushed porcelain tiles on the floor, Neff appliances and a central island and breakfast bar,” she explains. There are features such as built-in ovens, a fridge freezer and a wine cooler and the glass doors are bi-folding. “We spend a lot of time in here – it is a very sociable space,” she agrees. “It is lovely that it flows so well into the garden in the summer.”

BEDROOMS AND BATHROOMS
The family room, which has been arranged with a large sofa, television and desk, has added to the flexibility of the house. “This is a very versatile space that can be anything from a teenagers’ sitting room to a work space if required,” she adds. The bedrooms are all on the first floor and can be arranged to suit family needs. “The master suite is wonderful and its en suite bathroom is just lovely. This has a freestanding bath and is beautifully panelled – it is very spa like,” she says. “The bedroom with the en suite shower room has triple wardrobes and the other two bedrooms, which share the family bathroom, are also double in size.”

IDEAL HOME
The whole property has been designed with entertaining in mind. The south-facing garden, which enjoys the sun throughout the day, has been landscaped to include an outdoor kitchen. “There is a large porcelain terrace and then we also have a decked area where we can sit in the evening sunshine,” she says. They have also enjoyed their proximity to the outdoor spaces at Putnoe Wood and Mowsbury Park, as well as the Danish Camp. At the same time, local shops, supermarkets and good schools are all within easy reach and the centre of Bedford is just five minutes’ drive or bus ride. “We are moving now because we are relocating but we will miss almost everything about this house,” she admits. “Everything about it is exactly how we want it now and it is a lovely place to live.”

SETTING THE SCENE
To the front of the house on Tamworth Road there is a generous driveway and access to the garage. To the rear, there is an enclosed garden, featuring a lawn, porcelain-tiled terrace and area of decking, plus an outdoor kitchen.
