Situation
Millburn Cottage is situated just off the single track B8000 about 2.5 miles to the northern side of the pretty Argyllshire hamlet of Kilfinan.
From its delightful rural situation there are views which extend out across adjacent farmland to Loch Fyne.
Kilfinan is situated in the area known as Argyll's Secret Coast, which offers outstanding wildlife viewing opportunities with regular sightings of Red Squirrels, Otters, Pine Marten, and Black Grouse. Harbour Seal, Grey Seal and Porpoise are regularly seen in the Loch. Both the iconic Golden Eagle, and Sea Eagle have been recorded in the area and many species of seabirds nest on the islands in Loch Fyne.
Kames & Tighnabruaich are about 6 miles and offer shopping facilities that easily cater for everyday requirements. The Kilfinan Hotel is a short walk from the cottage and the Oystercatcher Restaurant at Otter Ferry is just under 4 miles away at Otter Ferry on the shore of the Loch. Portavadie Marina is approximately 5.9 miles away offering fine dining and leisure facilities including an outdoor heated pool with stunning views over the loch. The Ferry at Portavadie (5 miles) has regular sailings to Tarbert where there are more village stores and amenities. A main weekly shop would be more likely in Dunoon (24.9 miles) where there are supermarkets and further stores and services.
Glasgow is 61 miles and has numerous retail districts and all the higher educational, cultural and leisure services normally associated with a major international centre.
Tighnabruaich has a reputable and award-winning primary school and secondary is available at Dunoon where it is possible for senior students to board weekly.
The area is famous for its dramatic natural scenic beauty, yachtsmen and women of the world sail in the area and through Loch Fyne to the Crinan canal to the Hebridean islands.
The area offers much in the way of relaxing outdoor pursuits, there are near endless cycle runs, walks and challenging hill climbs. The recently established Cowal Way stretches from Portavadie in the west and travels eastwards through some of the most dramatic and picturesque sea and landscapes in the west coast.
There is a scenic 9-hole golf course at Kames, as well as a tennis and a bowling club and a sailing club.
Sea, river and loch fishing is also available in the area as are a number of commercially run shoots. Some of the local estates allow stalking by arrangement.
Travel Directions
From Glasgow city centre leave in a westerly direction on the M8 motorway. Continue for 21 miles to arrive at Port Glasgow. Follow signs Greenock and Gourock on the A770 for 8 miles to reach the Western Ferry terminal at McInroys Point. Take the ferry to Hunters Quay Dunoon. Leave the terminal and turn right on the A815 through Sandbank. After 3.5 miles turn left on to the B836. Travel for 11 miles before turning right on to the A886. Travel for 1.5 miles then turn left onto the A8003. Travel for 7 miles to reach Tighnabruaich. On entering TIGHNABRUAICH, turn right at the Royal/ An Lochan Hotel and head up the hill. At the Post office at Kames turn right on the B8000.
Continue the B8000 signposted Kilfinan Continue the B8000 until you see Melldalloch Loch which has a large white house next to the Loch on your right, follow the road down the hill and the cottage is on the next bend on your right. Please park on the grass to your left opposite the cottage. If you see the Melldalloch Lodges sign you have gone too far, do a U turn and you will see the cottage on your left.
Alternatively, by road (and the quicker route past Loch Lomond). Take the M8 through Glasgow and turn off for Erskine Bridge, continue along dual carriageway passing Dumbarton & Loch Lomond turning left onto the A83 at Tarbet. Proceed through Arrochar and Rest & Be Thankful, turning left onto the A815 to Strachur. Turn right at Strachur onto A886, then after 3 miles turn right onto the B8000. This road runs alongside Loch Fyne to Otter Ferry. At the Oystercatcher Pub turn left for approx 7 miles and Millburn Cottage is on the left hand.
