From the outside, the handsome, Gothic chapel makes a dramatic impression – then, when visitors step inside they are nothing less than astounded. The striking building, which dates back to Victorian times, has been converted into an exquisite home, with a plethora of gorgeous features and a wealth of style and sophistication. “We have always loved quirky homes and this one was certainly very different to any other we had ever seen before,” one of the current owners recalls. “It was a little out of the area we were originally looking in but when we went to view it we could not believe the amount of space it had and the amazing views. After that, we just couldn’t say no!”

Rooms

CHIC AND UNIQUE
Believed to have been built in 1858, the former Marston Moretaine Wesleyan Methodist chapel is thought to have been deconsecrated about 10 years ago. It was then converted into a residential building by a builder with an eye for the unique. “We bought it four years ago and completed it ourselves, making finishing touches and adding a few extras of our own to transform it into more of a home,” he explains. “My wife has a real eye for interior design and has enhanced the property with her choice of furniture, furnishings and artwork.” He adds: “We also bought an extra section of garden so we could extend our outside space and we converted part of the garage into an office.”

AMAZING SPACE
Set behind elegant wrought-iron railings and a very neat driveway, the Old Chapel is entered via great double doors that open into a hall. From here there is access to a ground floor cloakroom and utility room. More doors then give on to the spectacular, open-plan living area, which in turn has a bank of glass at the far end, overlooking the south-facing garden and framing the field views. The open-plan area features exposed brickwork, beams and a stunning central spiral staircase. “We love open-plan living and there is so much wonderful space here,” he observes. The capacious room is divided into different zones for the kitchen, dining and sumptuous seating areas. The glass doors at the back pull right back to offer seamless indoor-outdoor living. “We find this a very easy, comfortable home to live in."

LIGHT FANTASTIC
Both the ground and first floors of the three-bedroom property have underfloor heating. Natural light streams in via the original arched windows, the new glass doors and the galleried landing above the main living area. There is a snug at ground-floor level, which could also make a superb study or playroom, and one of the seating areas in the open-plan space features a chic, winter-warming wood burner. The striking, white kitchen, with its island and breakfast bar, encompasses quartz work surfaces, while state-of-the-art appliances include a boiling water tap and steam oven. “The kitchen is cleverly designed to make cooking a pleasure.”

BEAUTIFUL BEDROOMS
The spiral staircase leads up to the airy galleried landing, with its vaulted ceiling and glass balustrades. From here there is access to all three en suite bedrooms. “Having a private bathroom for each bedroom ensures everyone has their own space when we have guests,” he says. “All the bedrooms are light and airy but the master suite is particularly impressive.” Here, the exquisite bedroom is dual-aspect, with French windows opening on to a glass-fronted Juliet balcony which captures views out over the field. “We often see birds out here and sometimes deer in the field,” he adds. The master bedroom has a beautiful ensuite bathroom, with a sleek, freestanding bath, as well as a shower.

EXCELLENT LOCATION
The current owners are now moving on as they are relocating to be closer to family, but they will remember their time at the Old Chapel with very fond memories. They have also enjoyed living in Marston Moretaine, with its shops, coffee shops and school, as well as its exceptional access to both Bedford and Milton Keynes. “We are also lucky enough to be close to lots of lovely places to walk, including the Millennium Country Park,” he adds. “Living here in a former chapel has been wonderful; there is now else quite like it – it has been a real experience.”
