Every morning, before she heads off to work, the owner of Rainbows End likes nothing more than to swim a few lengths of her indoor pool. “It is so lovely to be able to do this at the beginning of each day,” she admits. “The swimming pool has given us so much pleasure over the years – all the grandchildren just love it. In the summer, we pull the doors to the garden right back and the children love to run in and out, splashing in the water and playing in the sunshine.” She adds: “There has been so much to enjoy about this house since we moved here in 1986 – it has been a wonderful family home and a great place for entertaining and welcoming visitors. We will take lots of very happy memories with us when we leave.”

Rooms

TWO HOMES IN ONE
Set on sought-after Copper Beech Way, in Leighton Buzzard, the expansive property was first built back in 1968. It nestles in a gorgeous, mature plot, with woodland behind, and has been significantly improved and extended by the current owners in the 38 years or so it has been their home. “We were initially drawn to the house by the size of the garden and the fact it had a small annexe at the time,” she recalls. “Since then, we have extended and modernised the annexe, transforming it into self-contained accommodation, with its own front door and access to the swimming pool. It has a sitting room, cloakroom and kitchen downstairs and two bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs. It is ideal for an older relative or grown-up child – or could be perfect for someone seeking to do short-term lets perhaps.”

BEAUTIFUL BEDROOM SUITE
Other improvements to the substantial property have seen them replace the swimming pool roof, add a conservatory and create a much larger sitting and dining room, as well as an impressive kitchen breakfast room. A new utility room was added, a garage was built and the kitchen and bathrooms have been replaced. “We also opened up the layout on the first floor to create a lovely large master bedroom, with an en-suite bathroom, shower room and dressing area,” she says. “This is a magnificent bedroom, which has views out over the secluded garden.”

SUMMER DAYS
The main house is entered via a central reception hall, with access to a cloakroom, as well as a study or games room, which also doubles as a bar. “We have a jukebox in there and this is where people love to gather during a party.” The hall leads into the large, central sitting and dining room, which in turn opens into the family room and the conservatory. “We spend a lot of time in this part of the house, watching television in the sitting room or relaxing in the conservatory, where it is nice to sit and read and look out over the garden at any time of year.” She adds: “In the summer or if we have a party, we pull the bi-folding doors right open in here.”

EASY LIVING
To the other side of the hall, is the generous kitchen breakfast room, which leads to the pool and utility room. The stylish kitchen has a central island and breakfast bar, plus ample space for comfortable seating and dining furniture. “The kitchen is very much the hub of the house for us – we have a settee and a television in there,” she explains. “It is a great family room.” Upstairs in the main part of the house, there are five bedrooms. In addition to the splendid master suite, there are four other bedrooms and a good-sized family bathroom. “With the annexe as well, it is very easy to accommodate overnight guests,” she adds.

PRIVATE AND PEACEFUL
Rainbows End enjoys a leafy setting. In addition to its own glorious garden, it has access to a paddock, where friends and neighbours gather to watch their children playing cricket or football. “We love to spend as much time as possible outside,” she agrees. “In the garden, we have a very attractive summerhouse or shed that has a mill wheel attached – someone else could certainly consider converting this into an office or studio.” Despite the tranquillity of the area, the owners have enjoyed excellent access to the centre of Leighton Buzzard, as well as to Milton Keynes, London, Luton and Heathrow Airport. “We will miss everything about being here when we leave,” she admits. “More than anything, however, I will miss the garden. It has so much colour, especially in the spring and summer, and is just such a private and peaceful place to spend time.”

SETTING THE SCENE
Rainbows End is set back from the road by a very generous driveway and a double garage. It sits on a leafy plot, with lots of interesting and colourful plants, shrubs and trees. There are areas of lawn and terrace. Both the main house and the annexe have doors to the indoor pool, which in turn can be opened up on one side to the garden.
