Passing down the long driveway and crossing the humpback bridge, Rob never fails to appreciate the glorious scenery in which his unique home nestles. His ground-floor apartment is set within the original farmhouse on a country manor estate, where it is surrounded by 10 acres of beautiful parkland featuring two lakes and a walled garden. “As I come over the bridge by the lake, with fields on either side of me, it is so pretty and peaceful and I never fail to think how wonderful it is – even though I have lived here for three years now,” he admits. “This is such a spectacular location and living here is rather like being part of a small hamlet. Everyone is so friendly and yet we all have our privacy. The apartment itself, which has its own front door, is such a good size for one or two people and is ideal for anyone looking for somewhere safe to lock up and leave.”

Rooms

INTERIOR IMPROVEMENTS
Believed to have been created within the boot rooms of the old farmhouse, the Grade II*-listed apartment enjoys magnificent views out over grounds that were landscaped by renowned 18th-century designer Richard Woods, a contemporary of Capability Brown. The building itself is thought to date back to the 17th century but has been upgraded over the years, including by Rob himself. “I changed the bathroom to a shower room, installed secondary glazing to all the windows and added thermal blinds,” he explains. He also enhanced the flexibility of the second bedroom by bringing in an innovative StudyBed that allows for seamless conversion between work and sleeping space and installed a funky fire, with options for changing its colour, depending on your mood. He adds: “I have chosen to decorate all the rooms very simply, injecting colour through artwork, furniture and furnishings instead.”

CHEF’S DREAM
At the heart of the apartment is a generous sitting and dining room. Here there is ample space for both comfortable seating and a dining table and chairs. “This is where I tend to spend most of my time,” Rob says. “There is plenty of room for entertaining and it is a nice place to sit and relax by the fire.” A door from the sitting and dining room leads into a small hall and from there the kitchen can be accessed. “This is very convenient and has been fitted out with everything you need. There is a fantastic hob which provides the exceptional performance of induction as well as a wonderful gas wok ring,” he adds.

PARKLAND VIEWS
The stylish shower room, with its walk-in shower, is opposite the kitchen. The two beautiful bedrooms can be accessed from the sitting and dining room. The master bedroom, which enjoys a leafy view, is a good size, with ample space for a wardrobe. The second bedroom features the clever StudyBed. “This is a lovely place to sit and work as it is wonderfully light and has a splendid view,” he agrees. “It has also been so useful when guests have come to stay.”

NATURAL BEAUTY
The gorgeous communal gardens have given Rob nothing but immense pleasure over the past three years. “I love sitting on the lawn in front of the apartment, going to the end of the large lake to read a book or simply wandering around and enjoying the beautiful space,” he says. “It is always so wonderfully quiet here – I can often hear nothing but birdsong – and there is so much wildlife to watch.”A few years ago, a gardening group of volunteers was formed to restore and tend the walled garden. “I have really enjoyed being part of that. It is a great team of people and it is nice to feel part of the community.”

BEST OF ALL WORLDS
Despite being surrounded by the picturesque parkland estate, at the heart of scenic countryside, the property at Wavendon House Drive is well positioned for reaching shops, leisure facilities and transport connections. “The road access here is second to none,” Rob observes. “There are also good options for railway stations within a few minutes. For cyclists, the redways are safe and comprehensive and this is a great location for central Milton Keynes, with its shopping centres, restaurants, theatre and cinemas. I have also enjoyed my proximity to music venue the Stables and Woburn Abbey and its park.” Sad to be leaving his low-maintenance home, Rob admits he will miss the friendly community as much as the magnificent parkland grounds. “It really is incredible,” he adds. “There is nowhere else quite like it.”
