Location

County Donegal is located on the north-westerly corner of Ireland and is considered one of Ireland's most beautiful and unspoilt counties which is renowned for its history, culture, music, heritage, and landscape. Donegal is typified by its dramatic towering sea cliffs, rolling lush hills and stunning beaches.

On the North-West coast of Donegal is Inishbofin, a unique tranquil island of approximately 300 acres. The island is located about 1 nautical mile / 2 km north of the mainland and is accessed via a ferry from Magheraroarty Pier.

Activities include bird-watching (Corncrake in the summer, Greenland and Barnacle geese in winter), sea kayaking, sailing, fishing and surfing at Magheraroarty Reef.

It is also a Gaeltacht region and there is a strong Irish-speaking community on the island. The immediate area is particularly popular with artists, photographers and Gaelic language students.

The name Inishbofin translates to ''island of the white cow''. According to the lore, a blacksmith on the mainland owned a white cow which was stolen by Balor, legendary one-eyed king of the neighbouring Tory Island, and hidden on Inishbofin.

Toberglassan Bay is located on the northern part of the island and has a most spectacular golden sandy beach with views to nearby uninhabited Inishdooey Island and the famous Tory Island.

The southern part of the island looks southeast towards Magheroarty Beach, a stunning sandy beach located at the headland of Horn Head, and east to the Errigal to Muckish mountain range and the renowned Horn Head peninsula. This peninsula lies above the town of Dunfanaghy and on the western side of Sheephaven Bay. There are also two fantastic beaches in this area, Tramore and Killahoey.

The island is only accessible by boat, with a boat service available from Magheroarty Pier. Donegal Airport is 25 km distant from Magheroarty Pier and offers flights to Dublin and throughout the UK and across Europe. Magheraroarty is well served by locally based luxury coaches connecting it to Letterkenny, Galway, Dublin, Derry/Londonderry, Belfast and Glasgow.
