Location

Often described as ‘the Gateway to the Cotswolds’, Shipston-on-Stour is a thriving market town situated in South Warwickshire. Just a short drive away is the culture and buzz of Stratford-upon-Avon, and the North Cotswolds, including Chipping Campden, Broadway, and Moreton-in-Marsh.

This lovely town is increasingly popular with visitors due to its friendly community,  independent mix of shops, fab café’s, delicatessen, welcoming pubs, restaurants and hotels.

The town has a primary and a secondary school, a medical centre, two dentists, a town hall, leisure centre, a scout hut, and many other amenities, including a variety of sports clubs. The town also hosts several events throughout the year, such as the Shipston Wool Fair, craft markets, Shipston Proms, and Victorian Evening.

A little history.

The towns name derives from being known in ancient times as 'Sheep-wash-Town'. Shipston was for a long time an important sheep market town and after the demand for local wool began to diminish the town continued to flourish thanks to the opening in 1836 of a branch line from the horse-powered tramway built a decade before to link Stratford with Moreton-in-Marsh. The line became a modern railway in 1889. The town was also an important coaching town and many of the inns from that era surviving in the area of the High Street.

Well situated for communications with good train services from Banbury (15 miles) reaching Marylebone in about 56 minutes, and Moreton-in-Marsh (6 miles) reaching Paddington from 92 minutes; M40 junction, 10 miles away. Stratford-upon-Avon. 9 miles. Other major centres within easy reach include Birmingham, Warwick, Leamington Spa, Oxford, Cheltenham, Coventry and Birmingham.
