For more than 24 years now, the beautiful, detached house at Colesbourne Drive has been a versatile family home. Over the course of that time, it became everything its owners have needed it to be and today it remains a magnificent, flexible place to live, work and relax. “When we bought the house it had a separate annexe, which was ideal for us as we had elderly parents,” the owner recalls. “It was also in a good location for us, especially as it was so near the Grand Union Canal and beautiful Willen Lake.” Since then, she explains, the house has been upgraded, remodelled, and improved to meet their changing needs. “But throughout all of this, it has also been a very, very happy home,” she emphasises. “The children have grown up here; we have had some lovely gatherings and we have often had family from abroad to stay with us. It has been ideal.”

Rooms

ANNEXE ACCOMMODATION
Set back from the road, with a generous driveway and attractive frontage, the five-bedroom, detached house is believed to date back to the 1980s. “When we arrived here, it had lots of exposed brickwork, which we were less keen on so we had many of the walls plastered,” she explains. “This was done very sensitively, however, in case anyone ever wished to return it to its original style.” When the completely self-contained annexe accommodation was no longer required by the family, further work saw them bring this into the main body of the home. “We used the annexe space to create a large kitchen breakfast room and a separate bedroom or family room downstairs. This still has its own entrance and so can also be used as a smaller annexe. It was ideal for the children when they were teenagers as they were able to have their own space to have their friends over.”

LIGHT AND AIRY
The property is entered via a light-filled porch and then the capacious hall, which features a staircase leading up to a galleried landing, both with glass balustrades. “This is a large house with lots of very flexible living space downstairs,” she observes. “In addition to the bedroom or family room, we also have a shower room, cloakroom, and very generous study on the ground floor. This is large enough that it has plenty of room for two people to work from home if necessary. It has a sloping ceiling and skylight window, which ensures it is always filled with natural light. I currently use it as a craft room.”

INDOOR-OUTDOOR LIVING
The chic, contemporary-style kitchen, breakfast and dining room is also a good-sized space. Here aluminium glass doors can be opened on to the garden to create seamless indoor-outdoor living. “I love my kitchen because it is so light and airy,” she admits. “I like sitting in there are looking out on to the garden.” High-gloss units in red and white provide abundant storage, while twin islands offer ample workspace. These are joined by a breakfast bar for casual family dining. The kitchen part of the room is open-plan to the dining room, where more glass doors give on to the terrace. Double doors from here lead into the sitting room, which again opens on to the terrace. “This is ideal in the summer months, especially when you are entertaining.”

BEDROOMS AND BATHROOMS
On the first floor of the house, there are five bedrooms, one of which is currently used as a dressing room. “This was good for us as my husband would get up for work very early – but the cupboards in here are free-standing so someone else could turn it back into a bedroom again.” The master bedroom has an impressive en suite bathroom, featuring a bath and a shower. The family bathroom, which was refurbished three years ago, is a stunning space, with a contemporary, free-standing bath and large walk-in shower. “The arrangement of bedrooms and bathrooms here has worked very well for us over the years,” she adds.

SUMMER DAYS
The gorgeous garden has also given them great pleasure. “We have had so many lovely parties here – including two weddings – and have sometimes had a marquee up,” she remembers. On sunny days, she has also enjoyed walking alongside the canal or over to Willen Lake. “This has been a perfect place to live,” she says. “The buses are good, so you can manage without a car if need be, and it is easy to get to schools, shops, and the train station. It is also a good location if you need to travel to London or other places to work and it is ideal for a family.” She adds: “The house itself has been perfect for us because it has given us so much useful space.”
