The Whitechapel Cottage and fishing is about 3 miles west of Haydon Bridge. Haydon Bridge provides very good local facilities including a first and secondary school, coffee shop, small supermarket and three public house. Newcastle is easy to reach (31 miles) to the east and its own airport (28.5 miles) with regular domestic and international flights. Hexham (about 9.5 miles) has a variety of shops, a fortnightly farmers market and several large supermarkets, as well as a good choice of cafes, restaurants and pubs. There are also plenty of leisure facilities, with two golf courses in Hexham and the renowned course at Matfen Hall. There is a superb racecourse above Hexham. The Allen Banks and Stawood Gorge, a stunning National Trust property is very close by.
The fishings sit within a highly scenic countryside setting with woodland to the north and a pleasing view over parkland to the south resulting in a pretty setting for the fishings. The beat boasts a wide array of flora, fauna and wildlife along the riverbank with a wonderful collection of wildflowers appearing from spring through to late summer. There are no public rights of way across the property.
The two bedroom period cottage, together with paddock means that this can be the perfect private holiday destination and retreat for the dedicated angler.
THE SOUTH TYNE
The River South Tyne rises high in the North Pennines at Tynehead Fell in Cumbria and flows in a roughly north easterly direction to Warden Rock where it joins the North Tyne to become the River Tyne. There are 17 tributaries in the catchment area, the largest of which is the River Allen. The confluence or junction pool of the Allen and South Tyne is within the beat.
The South Tyne is a tributary of the River Tyne. The Tyne is renowned as being one of the most iconic rivers in the UK and is known for being one of the cleanest rivers in the UK and enjoys an excellent reputation for being the best salmon river in England.
The Tyne Rivers Trust consider the Tyne as the best river system for salmon and sea trout in England and Wales and is even starting to challenge some of the more famous Scottish rivers. The quality as well as the quantity of fish is superb; the season begins in February, with beautiful fish often caught on the opening day. Spring fish are gradually increasing in numbers with typically April/May being the best months. The best early season fishing up to May is on the main Tyne. Thereafter, the number of fish entering the river substantially increases. From June, the whole system produces steadily, with catches gradually increasing through July and August, and peaking in September and October.
THE SEASON
The season runs from 1st February to 31st October.
WHITECHAPEL FISHINGS
Until recently the fishings were owned by a family with limited interest in fishing. The fishing has been let to a couple of different fishing syndicates in recent history. As a consequence, it is not possible to provide accurate records but it is understood that about 25 salmon and about 25 sea trout have been caught annually. Fishing is from the left bank by wading.
RIVER BANK AND ACCESS
Parking is at the cottage. Some anglers have been known to park in the lay-by on the A69 at the east end of the beat.
WHITECHAPEL COTTAGE
Whitechapel Cottage is a detached two-bedroom cottage with a pretty garden and a traditional outbuilding. It is close to, but set back from the A69. A garden with a good degree of privacy compliments the cottage nicely and there is plenty of turning and parking space in front of the house. There is a paddock on the east side of the cottage providing amenity space and grazing. The woodland between the cottage and the river is formed with mature trees.
The cottage has two bedrooms, a good reception room with a high ceiling, a house bathroom and a modest kitchen which looks across the river and up the River Allen valley.
