Pulling back the extensive bi-fold doors on two sides of the kitchen, dining and family room in the summer or gazing out of the triple-aspect sitting room in winter, Sally and John live in close proximity to nature nature. Jackdaws, their stylish, contemporary home, sits beautifully within its gorgeous, mature gardens. “It is so peaceful here – we could be in the middle of nowhere,” Sally says. “We look out to the lovely greenery and watch the birds in the trees and it is hard to believe we are so close to central Milton Keynes. We came to Great Linford because it offered us the best of all worlds, living within a modern city, within easy reach of all it’s amenities, but within a few steps to Great Linford Manor Park and lots of other green spaces with miles of cycling and walking.”

RIPE FOR THE PICKING
Approximately 26 years old, Jackdaws was one of just three individual houses to be built on the site of an orchard to a Jacobean country house. “We liked the property as soon as we saw it because of the space it offered, as well as its wonderful location,” she recalls. “It had the potential to be transformed into the home we were looking for. We knew we could open it up, upgrade it and bring it into the modern world.” Certainly, work on Jackdaws has been extensive and now the house is a stylish, contemporary, light-filled home, with a high-quality finish throughout. Walls were removed, extensive bi-fold doors were doors installed to the rear, new bathrooms and a kitchen were fitted, new flooring was laid and every room was redecorated. “It now offers elegant, flexible living, while also being warm and inviting,” Sally observes.

LIGHT TOUCHES
Set back in its gardens and generous driveway providing off-road parking for six vehicles, five-bedroom Jackdaws has a striking, asymmetrical facade. Cedar-clad, the new section was architect-designed as part of an extension to allow Sally and John to reconfigure the space to the front of the house. “This allowed us to create an additional spacious bedroom with ensuite shower room upstairs, and add a cloakroom and pantry downstairs.” The reception hall is exceptionally bright and airy. It features a beautiful, solid wood floor that flows throughout the downstairs living areas, enhancing the cohesion between rooms. Stairs rise up to the rear of the space, where a bank of windows brings the natural light flooding in. Double pocket doors into the sitting room and kitchen, dining and family room heighten the sense of space while also allowing areas to be closed off if necessary.

LIFESTYLE CHOICES
The kitchen, dining and family room is a capacious, versatile space that new owners will be able to arrange to suit their own lifestyle requirements. Sally and John have created a relaxation area with comfortable seating beside one row of bi-folding doors and a dining space in an area where two more sets can be pulled open. The chic kitchen features a central island, the kitchen units in two subtle shades of light grey and exquisite white quartz work surfaces. “This room is where we spend much of our time during the day,” Sally admits. “It is also fantastic for entertaining,.”

AMAZING SPACE
The enormous sitting room, with its windows to three sides, including another row of bi-folding doors, is also perfect for welcoming guests. “We have had parties in this house for up to 70 guests, only last month we entertained 20 for dinner one evening she adds. “In the summer, when we have lots of people here for barbecues, we pull all the doors right back so everyone can wander in and out – and it is just glorious.” The first floor of Jackdaws encompasses five bedrooms. The impressive master suite has a large en suite shower room and a dressing room. Two other bedrooms, including a particularly sizeable second bedroom, also have en suite shower rooms. Two smaller bedrooms are served by the family bathroom. “These two rooms are still spacious enough for a double bed, bedside tables and a wardrobe or chest of drawers,” she explains.

SHEER PERFECTION
Bedrooms not currently arranged for sleeping have other uses – as work spaces, hobby rooms and even a gym. “This is such a flexible house and it has been such a lovely place to live,” Sally agrees. “We are within walking distance of local shops and two of the best pubs in Milton Keynes. There are good schools, we can get to the train station and motorway easily and we love the ease of being able to use the redway cycle tracks. We will miss everything about being here. It is all just perfect, from the house, which is ready for someone else to move into, to our beautiful gardens and surroundings.”
