The Story
In the autumn they enjoy the changing colours of the leaves and in the summer they bask out in the sunshine sharing their fabulous garden with friends. Denbigh, on Priory Road, has been a wonderful home to Natasha and her family throughout all the seasons. “We are surrounded by nature and wildlife here,” she explains. “The children sit down to breakfast and spend all their time looking out of the window, spotting squirrels and robins in the tree. We loved the location of this house as soon as we saw it 10 years ago. We like being in a village setting, with forest all around us, and yet on the edge of Ascot too, which means we have access to good schools, shops and the train station. We are also in an excellent position for getting into Windsor or to the Lexicon.”
A RARE FIND
Dating back to 1890, period home Denbigh is something of a rarity. “I wanted a Victorian house and finding one that was detached was just incredible,” Natasha recalls. “In addition, it is hard to believe, but we are only the second family ever to have lived here. The previous owners were three generations of the same family!” It was the charm of Victorian homes that so appealed to her, she explains. “I love their character and wanted a house with features, such as fireplaces and sash windows, and a bay window, where I could put a large tree at Christmas.”
MODERN LIVING
Since moving in, they have enhanced the period style of the property in its older sections, while also bringing their home firmly into the 21st century with some stunning improvement and extension work. “We spent three years living here and thinking about what we wanted to do,” she explains. “Then we carried out lots of work, replacing features where they had been removed and extending the property. We have really doubled it in size, transforming it from a Victorian cottage into a large home that is suitable for modern family living.” She adds: “Although it retains its character, it is also like a new-build in many ways.
We have replaced the old slate roof and re plastered and rewired the whole house. We added a new central heating system including a new boiler and mega flow tank, cast iron radiators and underfloor heating. All the bathrooms are new along with our hand painted wood kitchen.
GORGEOUS INTERIOR
Today Denbigh has a wonderful, tranquil ambience throughout. Its interior is filled with natural light and rooms are enhanced by largely neutral colour schemes featuring understated shades of Farrow & Ball paint. The front door opens into an entrance to the side, which leads in turn to the sitting room, which encompasses the bay window and an elegant fireplace. This is a relaxing, cosy space, especially in the winter months. “The former dining room, which makes a great space for children to play, is also here and now leads to a downstairs cloakroom and the study, which is excellent for working from home.
WHERE THE HEART IS
This spectacular, contemporary living space is very much the beating heart of the family home. With bi-folding doors on two sides, it can be opened right up to the garden in the spring and summer months. The chic, high-specification kitchen, with access to a utility room and walk-in pantry, features handpainted, dove grey cabinets finished with beautiful Carrara marble work surfaces. A large central island, with a breakfast bar, forms a fantastic centrepoint. There is also ample space for a table and chairs and comfortable seating area. “This is such a wonderful, versatile space for family living and entertaining,” she observes. “We have seated up to 22 people here for Christmas dinner and had wonderful barbecues, with the doors open and everyone wandering outside to the outdoor kitchen and entertaining space.”
BEAUTIFUL BEDROOMS
The first floor of Denigh has also been transformed by the owners. By weaving their magic, they have extended and reconfigured it so it now has four separate bedrooms and large family bathroom. The magnificent new master bedroom suite features a walk-in dressing room and en suite shower room. “This really is a lovely room,” she agrees. “All the bedrooms are brilliant though as they all have leafy views.” The family, who expected Denbigh to be their forever home, are sad to be moving on. “I will miss everything about this house when we go,” Natasha admits. “The location is great and the house is perfect. It will hold a little piece of my heart forever.”
