Description
Ventonhills Copse is a short walk from Venton House. The woodland is approximately half designated ancient woodland and half hazel coppice (with many ancient trees in it as well), extending to 14.61 acres in total, which have all been sympathetically managed over the years under the current ownership. There is a very large disused quarry, a lake (with its own island) and the Bidwell Brook running throughout it. It lies in the heart of the beautiful Bidwell Valley just to the north of Venton House. The woods are at the heart of and integral to the Bidwell Brook wildlife corridor, which runs from the edge of Dartmoor to the Dartington estate. There is an abundance of rare and beautiful wildlife; otters, deer, foxes, dormice, bats, owls, buzzards, geese, woodcock, and a mass of other invertebrates, amphibians and reptiles. In the spring they are a riot of bluebells and ramsons and throughout the year a constant changing delight of wildlife. This woodland is a truly magical place.

Follow lane for 100m passing Manor on left, park at the triangle in track. If driving from Exeter or Plymouth, take the Marley Head exit from the A38 and take the A385 towards Dartington, after approximately 2 miles the turning signed Venton Manor is on your left hand side, on sharp downhill lefthand bend.
