The Development:

Elmodesham House, originally built as Woodville House around 1715 for merchant Charles Eeles, features wall and ceiling paintings by Sir James Thornhill. The Eeles family owned it until the late 1700s when it was sold to surgeon James Rumsey. Following Rumsey’s death in 1824, the house became a school, later run by Reverend Ebenezer West’s son, Mr. Ebenezer West, as The Academy. In 1861, the school moved to Caversham and became Amersham Hall, while the house reverted to private ownership in 1866, undergoing several expansions and renovations under different owners, including Major J. Y. Stephen, who renamed it Elmodesham House.

The house changed hands multiple times before being purchased for Council Offices in 1931. During renovations in 1986, hidden murals by Thornhill were rediscovered but later partially stolen after media coverage. Following the council’s relocation, the building was converted into houses and flats, preserving its long and varied history.
