Location:
The parish of Benfica covers 7% of the city's territory but contains, in about half of its space, the *green lung* of the Portuguese capital, the Monsanto Forest Park.
Benfica began as a village of peasants of the Saloia region. With them also some religious orders settled in the territory.
In the 15th century, it was promoted to the seat of judgment of the Term of Lisbon, being granted two private judges. It was also at that time that three important Brotherhoods were settled: Our Lady of Amparo, St. Anthony and St. Sebastian.
In the 18th century there began to be a strong attraction of new wealthy classes, seduced by the landscape, which settle in farms.
In the 19th century, links with public transport appeared and the city grew exponentially.
City of Lisbon continued to grow rapidly, which was reflected in the growing urbanization of the parish. From the 1950s to the 1990s, the population tripled from 17,843 inhabitants to about 50,000 inhabitants.
In 1959 the territory is divided again and gives rise to the parish of São Domingos de Benfica.
More recently, along with the growing building, the resident population has declined, not only due to aging but also by the migration of younger inhabitants to the periphery.
Leisure and Culture:
Most of the monuments in Benfica that were not destroyed by the urban expansion, are from the farms of Benfica. Some of these monuments, such as Quinta da Granja or Vila Ana, were waiting for restoration or preservation works in early 2008.
Among others, the following elements stand out:
- Church of Our Lady of Amparo, on the Road of Benfica;
- Church of Calhariz, in the area known by the same name;
- Quinta da Granja, next to benfica stadium;
- Retiro do Bom Pastor, property of the Patriarchate of Lisbon;
- Águas Livres Aqueduct, parallel to the Sintra Line;
Among others.
Education:
Benfica has a Campus of the Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon that excels in diversity and quality, bringing together several universities such as the Lisbon Higher School of Education, the Escola Superior de Comunicação Social, the Escola Superior de Dança, the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa, the Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema, the Escola Superior de Tecnologia da Saúde de Lisboa, instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa , the Instituto Superior de Contabilidade e Administração de Lisboa.
In addition to these public institutions there are also private institutions of reference guaranteed access to good studies for people from different social classes.
