The medieval city of Durham is a popular place to live and it's easy to see why. Its charming cobbled streets, imposing castle and Norman cathedral bring in plenty of visitors and that keeps the city thriving. The world-class university, leisure and cultural venues, and fantastic shopping give Durham its wonderful welcoming atmosphere. Add easy access to the great outdoors of the Durham Dales and the North Pennines and you have excellent options for time out. The area surrounding Aykley Woods offers green spaces, parks and scenic countryside - great for spending outdoor time with the family. The Aykley Recreation Ground is right on the doorstep. Wharton Park makes a fun day out with a cafe and miniature car track and Crook Hall is a Grade I listed Medieval hall with stunning gardens, a maze and activities for children; both are within easy reach of the development. You can also walk along the River Wear, amble through Aykley Wood Nature Reserve, picnic in Broompark or visit the Durham Heritage Coast, approximately half an hour's drive away. If you enjoy keeping fit, Durham is host to many leisure activities and sports, including those at the Freeman's Quay Leisure Centre where you can enjoy the gym, exercise classes, courts, pitches and two pools. You could even learn to row - the annual Durham Regatta is a real highlight for the city. Also within easy reach of the development is the Gala Theatre offering a variety of comedy, dance, music and theatre productions as well as a two-screen cinema.

Education

Durham City has a wide choice of schooling for all ages, and there are several schools close to the development. For young children these include Newton Hall Infants School, Framwellgate Moor Primary School and St Godric's RC VA Primary School. Secondary education is offered at Durham Trinity School & Sports College, St Leonard's Catholic School and Durham Johnstone Comprehensive School. There are also colleges offering further education, and of course, the famous Durham University for higher education.
